Letter to the Editor
from Shem

Sir, I seem to have heard little else this year, from TV, radio and newpapers, other than how many tons of carbon dioxide each of us is putting into the atmosphere as a consequence of our reliance on fossil fuels.
Am I the only one concerned about the water? As everyone who has had the most elementary of schooling in science will know, the combustion of hydrocarbon gives carbon dioxide and water (and approximately three parts of water for every four of carbon dioxide). So how many tons of water per person is that ? We all know how heavy water is and we all know that what goes up must come down.
Should I be worried? I was going to ask my Dad, but apparently he has gone off to B&Q looking for gopher wood, pitch and a measuring tape calibrated in cubits.
Yours, Shem
